Alarming Rise in Animal Cruelty Deserves Immediate Attention

Target: Mr. Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha

Goal: Ensure stricter measures and more effective enforcement against animal cruelty.

In Odisha, India, a distressing pattern of animal cruelty has emerged. As revealed in a recent assembly session, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Odisha booked over 1,200 cases of such cruelty in the last three years. This alarming figure, alongside a collection of fines totaling Rs 55,750, paints a grim picture of the state’s treatment of animals. Despite these efforts by the SPCA, the true extent of animal cruelty in the region is potentially even greater. Notably, urban areas are witnessing a rise in such cases, signaling a dire need for more robust intervention.

Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain has acknowledged these concerns. He highlighted the formation of district-level SPCAs and ongoing awareness drives aimed at curbing animal cruelty. However, these measures seem insufficient in addressing the scale of the problem. Speak for Animal, a volunteer organization, stresses that the reported figures represent just a fraction of actual incidents. Call for more stringent and effective strategies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Naveen Patnaik,

We write to bring to your attention a pressing concern in Odisha regarding the welfare of animals. Recent reports from the state assembly have brought to light an unsettling number of animal cruelty cases. Over three years, the SPCA in Odisha has registered more than 1,200 such cases. Despite efforts to raise awareness and enforce penalties, the situation demands further action.

We urge you, as Chief Minister of Odisha, to implement more stringent measures and enhance enforcement against animal cruelty in Odisha. This situation requires a comprehensive approach, including stricter laws, increased funding for animal welfare organizations, and more efficient legal processes to address and deter such acts.

The rise in animal cruelty cases, especially in urban areas, is a matter of grave concern. We seek your intervention to safeguard the rights and well-being of animals in Odisha. By strengthening the mechanisms to combat animal cruelty, we can ensure a more humane and compassionate society.

Sincerely,
