Target: Joe Biden, President of the United States; Xi Jinping, President of China
Goal: Support plans to increase renewable energy and decrease greenhouse gasses in the U.S. and China.
The United States and China have long topped a dubious list for world’s biggest polluters. Collectively, the two nations account for about 40 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. World leaders and ordinary citizens alike have acknowledged that if the planet is to have any hope of avoiding worst-case scenarios in the climate crisis, this duo must play an instrumental role. This ForceChange petition and this petition called on the countries to do their part, and they may finally be listening.
The meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping was touted as an opportunity to reset the relationship between the increasingly adversarial nations and to find a way to work together on matters of international importance. One of the most consequential moments arrived when each country’s representatives announced a long-term collaboration on climate initiatives. Among the joint goals in the announcement are a pledge by both nations “to triple renewable energy capacity” within the next seven years as well as new and stricter reduction targets for various greenhouse gases, including methane (a measure once vehemently avoided by China) and carbon. The two countries reaffirmed these efforts at the COP28 conference.
