Don’t Let Faulty Fridges Sicken Consumers

Target: Alexander Hoehn-Saric, Chair of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Goal: Issue necessary recalls and warnings related to potentially defective refrigerators.

Refrigerators are crucial appliances in nearly every American household, yet accumulating data suggests one of the appliance’s top makers is consistently failing consumers in major and sometimes dangerous ways. Samsung refrigerators have gained notoriety as the appliance most frequently reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). While the organization has investigated the hundreds of complaints logged each year, they have taken no meaningful action.

Frequently cited problems include water leaks, fire hazards, lack of temperature control, and faulty icemakers. Such issues may have cost consumers significant money in repairing or replacing these reported defects, but more concerning effects have also been the subject of complaints. Some consumers are alleging that because of ice buildup and improperly maintained temperatures, food is spoiling and as a result making people sick who consume it.

Despite a rise in complaints dating back to 2020, no recalls or warnings have been issued for these products. Sign the petition below to urge the CPSC to take necessary action to protect consumers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chair Hoehn-Saric,

“It’s beyond comprehension that an agency that has the words ‘consumer’ and ‘product safety’ in its name isn’t actually able to do everything that it can to protect consumers from dangerous products.” A spokesperson for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group made this important statement in regard to the CPSC’s action—or lack of action—on its most frequently cited appliance: Samsung refrigerators. These appliances constitute over 75 percent of all refrigerator-related complaints in the country, and the continued uptick over the past few years even prompted an investigation.

Why, in the face of multiple reports of dangers like fire hazards and food poisoning, has the CPSC failed to issue a single recall…or even a warning to consumers? Every American should be made aware of the potential risks associated with such a prevalent product. Please rectify this serious oversight and take the necessary actions to honor your mission and protect consumers.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
