Target: Dennis Francis, President of United Nations General Assembly
Goal: Advocate for more humanitarian aid for the people of Afghanistan.
Over three thousand people believed dead, thousands of communities in ruins, refugees seeking respite in public parks: this reality is just the latest chapter in a grossly underreported stream of tragedies befalling the people of Afghanistan. The aforementioned bleak events occurred in the aftermath of a series of devastating earthquakes that shook the already-downtrodden nation. The disasters have filled hospitals to capacity and created a public health crisis compounded by a severe shortage of drinking water and other critical aid.
Unfortunately, much like in the aftermath of the Taliban takeover, the world seems to be turning a mostly blind eye to the humanitarian catastrophe inflicted on the Afghan people. Civilians in the midst have expressed frustration that aid groups often simply survey the damage only to depart a short time later. And the type of committed international aid that often arises following other major world events is noticeably absent in Afghanistan, particularly since Taliban rule was reinstated: a time when citizens need this help most.
Sign the petition below to call on world leaders to stop punishing these human beings for the actions of their leaders.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Francis,
“Let’s not add ‘forgotten’ to the long list of tragedies that this resilient nation has already endured.” An International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies spokesperson recently sent this message to the world in regard to the most recent crisis crippling Afghanistan. A series of devastating earthquakes have destroyed thousands of villages and killed an estimated 3,000 people. Now refugees are desperately seeking food, shelter, and common decency from a world that has seemingly forgotten them.
These individuals did not ask to be abandoned or oppressed, but they are bearing the brunt of the punishment for the actions of the Taliban. Depriving them of help sends a dangerous and hopeless message. Please step up efforts to deliver the international aid desperately needed.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
