Target: Jesse Gabriel, California Assemblymember
Goal: Commend ban on food ingredients deemed unhealthy and unsafe.
The ingredients used in processed foods have drawn increasing scrutiny for their potential links to dangerous health conditions like cancer. Supporters of this ForceChange petition called for decisive action on non-essential ingredients from a popular candy that were deemed harmful. California is taking notice and taking action, setting a standard that may reverberate even further.
The California Food Safety Act has won bipartisan support and passage from the state’s legislature. It now only needs the governor’s expected signature to become law. The legislation will ban the inclusion of several concerning ingredients in food products. Each of these ingredients is already almost uniformly banned in Europe over carcinogenic concerns as well as potential associations with development problems during childhood and even reproductive problems. One of the ingredients, Red Dye No. 3, came under fire from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration three decades ago. Companies will now be compelled to create new and safer recipes that omit these harmful substances.

PETITION LETTER:
Dear Assemblymember Gabriel,
“It’s going to make our food supply much safer.” This simple assertion strikes at the heart of what the California Food Safety Act can accomplish. Americans can and should rest assured that the products they consume are as safe in this nation as anywhere else in the world.
Thank you for working together with colleagues and providing needed security where regulators have failed. California will lead the way in creating a safer consumer experience for every individual and family.
Sincerely,
