Protect Unique Intertidal Habitats and Rocky Shores From Money-Hungry Developers

Target: Melanie Loyzim, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection

Goal: Safeguard invaluable intertidal habitats and rocky shores from degradation and habitat loss.

Maine’s intertidal habitats and rocky shores are a distinctive natural treasure. Spanning over 3,000 miles of coastline, these ecosystems provide a haven for countless species of marine life and offer a unique opportunity for scientific research and recreational activities. However, in recent years, these invaluable habitats have been facing significant threats, including shoreline development, pollution, and overharvesting.

The delicate balance of life along Maine’s rocky shores is in jeopardy. The relentless encroachment of coastal development disrupts the natural contours of the shoreline, endangering the survival of numerous species that rely on these habitats for breeding, feeding, and shelter. Pollution from various sources poses a grave risk to the health of these ecosystems, undermining water quality and impacting marine life. Overharvesting of intertidal species, such as seaweed and shellfish, poses an imminent threat to the ecological integrity of these habitats.

Sign the petition below to demand immediate action to protect Maine’s unique intertidal habitats and rocky shores from further degradation and habitat loss.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Loyzim,

We, the undersigned, write to express our deep concern for the critical state of Maine’s intertidal habitats and rocky shores. These unique ecosystems are not only essential for the myriad species that call them home but also play a crucial role in supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities and providing a source of wonder for all who visit them.

It is imperative that comprehensive measures are put in place to safeguard these invaluable natural resources. Coastal development must be carefully regulated to minimize its impact on the delicate balance of life along the rocky shores. Stringent pollution control measures are essential to protect the water quality that is vital to the health of these ecosystems. Furthermore, immediate steps must be taken to address overharvesting and ensure the sustainable management of intertidal species.

We implore you to take decisive action to conserve and protect Maine’s intertidal habitats and rocky shores for current and future generations. The time to act is now before these unique ecosystems suffer irreparable damage.

Sincerely,
