Man Likely to Face Death Penalty After Allegedly Unfair Detention Deserves Justice

Target: Mr. Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Advocate for immediate government action to secure justice for Jagtar Singh Johal in India

Jagtar Singh Johal, a British citizen, has been reportedly unfairly imprisoned since he was accused of helping to fund a Sikh-on-Hindu assassination plot. He may soon face the death penalty, even though no formal charges have been filed against him. Mr. Johal’s detention and the grave threat of the death penalty he is facing have raised alarms globally. His brother, Gurpeet Johal, has accused the UK government, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, of a lack of “political will” to secure his release.

While Mr. Sunak has taken the helm as the Prime Minister, he reportedly declined to commit to raising the case with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his attendance at the G20 Summit in Delhi, leaving many to question whether all available diplomatic avenues have been exhausted in Mr. Johal’s quest for justice.

In a letter to Mr. Johal’s local MP, Foreign Office minister Lord Ahmad stated that they do not believe calling for Mr. Johal’s release would be in his best interests, citing concerns about interference in the Indian judicial process. However, the international community remains deeply concerned about Mr. Johal’s welfare and the fairness of his trial. Demand action now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Mr. Rishi Sunak,

We, the undersigned, write to you as concerned citizens to urge your immediate attention to the deeply troubling case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British citizen currently detained in India. Mr. Johal’s detention since 2017 and the looming threat of the death penalty have raised profound concerns about his human rights and the fairness of the legal process to which he is subjected.

The accusations and legal processes surrounding Mr. Johal’s case require the utmost scrutiny. As Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, your influence and voice hold significant weight. We implore you to exercise your authority to advocate for Mr. Johal’s right to a fair and transparent legal process, and to ensure that all diplomatic avenues are explored to secure his release.

The welfare of British citizens abroad is a matter of paramount importance, and it is essential that the UK government takes all necessary actions to protect its citizens and uphold the principles of justice and human rights. We call upon you to use your position to raise awareness of Mr. Johal’s case and to engage in diplomatic efforts to secure his release, ensuring that he receives the justice and fair treatment he deserves.

Sincerely,
