Success: Organization Offers Positive Response to Allegations of Slave Labor Use

Target: Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA

Goal: Commend FIFA’s response to the reported use of inhumane migrant labor to build Qatar’s World Cup infrastructure.

FIFA’s World Cup is considered one of the greatest sports events in the world. Over a billion people on average catch the matches either in person or on television. With all this attention, it is not surprising Qatar had to rush to make a big impression after being asked to host in 2022. The country beefed up its infrastructure as well as built and renovated new and existing stadiums. They allegedly made use of migrant labor and gave workers exhaustive hours every day with low and inconsistent pay. The issue was highlighted before World Cup 2022 in this Force Change petition.

Supposed human rights violations such as these have gotten the world’s attention. Numerous news outlets are reporting on ways Qatar has not upheld the positive reputation of the World Cup and attracted a good deal of criticism. Rights advocates and organizations have called on FIFA and Qatar to accept wrongdoing and make whatever effort possible to correct harm done. FIFA’s website recently published a lengthy statement taking a stance on such violations in 2022 and they are offering a channel for reports of human rights infringement.

Sign the petition below and thank FIFA President Infantino for acknowledging Qatar’s possible infractions relating to human rights violations in establishing the World Cup in 2022.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Infantino,

By now you are aware of the mass of allegations against Qatar and potential human rights violations, some relating to labor practices when preparing the country for World Cup 2022. Widespread talk of this allegedly terrible behavior makes it difficult to ignore. Not only do people want justice for those seemingly wronged in Qatar, but it is especially in the best interest of your organization to make sure this alleged wrongdoing never happens again.

FIFA made a substantial move in adding a statement to the organization’s website seemingly acknowledging different types of violations and your decrying of such acts. The world looks to you to take a stance as the head of the largest sports event in the world and create a positive influence for individuals, cities, and countries across the globe. It is the hope of many that FIFA will follow through on investigating and directly addressing any infractions in Qatar and set the bar much higher for future host countries.

We thank you for taking a stance on alleged slave labor practices and becoming a pioneer speaking out in favor of human rights.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
