Goal: Help victims of domestic violence by protecting their pets.
An estimated 71% of women at domestic violence shelters report that their abusers also targeted their pets, according to Representative Angela Romero of Salt Lake City. Abusers also often exploit their victims’ emotional attachment to pets as a tactic of manipulation, and about 25% of domestic violence survivors say they return to their abusers because they are worried about the safety of their pets.
A bill that would provide vital protections for pets against instances of domestic abuse has passed the Utah House. If this bill passes the Senate, Utah will follow thirty-five other states which already have similar protections in place. Not only would this bill save animals from suffering, it would also provide psychological support to survivors of domestic abuse and stalking.

A bill has recently passed the Utah House which would instate vital protections for pets targeted by acts of domestic abuse. In addition to helping to reduce animal suffering, this bill would also help survivors of domestic violence feel like they can escape their situations. About a quarter of domestic violence survivors say they return to their abusers because they are worried about the safety of their pets. With this bill, survivors can be assured that their pets will be taken care of.
We are asking you, Mr. Adams, to join thirty-five other states in prioritizing the physical and psychological welfare of animals and victims over domestic abusers. Pass this bill in the Utah Senate.

Our legal system and animal shelters needs to have a plan to save both humans and pets. A shelter for both humans and pets would be ideal.
Most of the shelters are nonprofits that depend on donations from the community. There are a few domestic violence shelters that also provide assistance for the pets, but more are needed. If you can give, please do.

I agree with Paula. There are such shelters where animals are included and welcomed but it needs to be many, many more. Women suffer so much and stay so long until they are either hurt or totally broken. They worry about their children, their pets, even their friends. Abusers are the scum of the earth. They live in constant fear for themselves and their loved ones. Our legal system is not tough enough on abusers of any species. We need a stronger system of laws, prosecutors, and judges. We allow abusers to get out of jail with few if any requirements or restrictions. Every state must make abuse of any living thing a felony and then back it up! It’s serious!

Every shelter should be set up to take both the humans and their pets. I know there are some now but I imagine that it’s hard to get into them with your pet as they would have to be at full capacity most or all of the time. I don’t know this for sure but common sense says there are lots of abused people wanting to take their pets with them. I agree with “g” that abuse of people or animals should be a felony and no plea deals, no slap on the wrists, no probation only – a felony with fines and serious jail time.
I hope this cat was taken for help needing medical attention. This petition didn’t say. I feel sick. People abuse everything in this world. A bunch of low lives!! Poor women poor cats. So sad of a world for children as well. Innocent beings get caught up in this abuse. Can’t lawmakers be rational, or is it always about the damn money from having that job. If you are aware, blue states have fallen down to extremes.

I strongly support this Petition and commend the Utah House for passing these vital protections for pets targeted by acts of domestic abuse. With such a large percentage of Men targeting pets in domestic violence cases, the time is now for the Utah Senate to step up and protect the most innocent and vulnerable victims of their abusers.

There should be places to go for human and animals that are being abused . Or kick the abusive people out onto the streets. Demand tougher penalties for abusive people who have a problem and are trying to be something they’re not .
