Target: Joseph Biden, President of the United States
Goal: Halt timber sales in old growth forests.
Despite the environmental pledges of President Biden, his administration has allowed for continued timber sales in a number of old growth forests. This directly counters his previously stated goals to protect the environment and fight climate change.
Old growth forests are a critical ecosystem because they are both incredibly diverse and well established. Many species of plant and animal benefit from this environment, for example the endangered spotted owl throughout Oregon and Washington. Beyond their importance as an irreplaceable ecosystem, old growth forests also serve as a significant carbon sinks. The high number of large and mature trees are able to remove significant amounts of carbon from our atmosphere. Protecting these forests needs to be a priority as we move forward against climate change.
The Biden administration should live up to its pledges to protect the environment and address climate change. It should not be contributing to the continued destruction and active removal of the natural resources we have to combat the climate crisis. Sign below to call on President Biden to honor his word and protect us all from the climate crisis.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Biden,
Throughout your presidential candidacy you repeatedly made pledges to protect the environment and address climate change. Your administration continuing to allow for timber sales in old growth forests is in direct contradiction to these pledges.
The climate crisis is here, it is happening now, and we cannot afford to lose anymore of our old growth forests. They not only serve as a critical ecosystem for many vulnerable animals, like the spotted owl, but they are actively removing carbon from our environment. You must do whatever is necessary to protect these irreplaceable forests.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
