Biden: Take Urgent Action on Climate Change and Declare a National Emergency

Target: Joseph Biden, President of the United States of America

Goal: Issue a national emergency so the US can take urgent action to mitigate the climate disaster.

The United Kingdom has been experiencing an unprecedented heatwave this summer. Temperatures at London’s Heathrow Airport are reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit by early afternoon – 30 degrees above what is normal for the area. Last year the US’s Pacific Northwest experienced its own unusual heatwave with temperatures peaking at 108 degrees Fahrenheit in Seattle, Washington and 116 degrees in Portland, Oregon. In all these instances, high temperatures resulted in devastating wildfires and the loss of lives and the destruction thousands of acres of lands. These two heatwaves come on the heels of Australia’s 2020 heatwave and wildfires; temperatures there peaked at 123 degrees Fahrenheit. The climate disaster is here, it’s happening now, and the US must take urgent action to address it.

Recently, a new attempt to pass climate legislation failed in the Senate, blocked once again by Virginia’s Joe Manchin. The United States has consistently failed to adequately take on the climate crisis and the Trump administration undid many of the gains that had been made. President Biden ran on the promise he’d tackle the climate disaster head on, and he needs to live up to that promise by declaring a national climate emergency. We can’t wait for ‘politics as usual’ to solve the problem. The Washington Post reports that if such an emergency is declared it would “allow the president to halt crude oil exports, limit oil and gas drilling in federal waters, and direct agencies including the Federal Emergency Management Agency to boost renewable-energy sources.”

Demand President Biden put the people first and take immediate action on climate change by declaring it a national emergency.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Biden,

We can no longer afford to wait out coal-backed politicians like Senator Manchin in Congress. Every year we experience catastrophic heatwaves, raging wildfires, and other extreme weather events that take human and animal lives while destroying the natural world. The climate disaster is here, it’s happening now, and the US must take urgent action to address it.

You ran on the promise of addressing climate change and you need to live up to your word. Declare climate change a national emergency and take every possible step to stop US contributions to the disaster. It’s time to put the people and the planet over politics and corporate interests.

Sincerely,
