Don’t Allow College Loan Debt to Cripple Students

Target: Education Secretary Miguel Cardona

Goal: Relieve in part or whole the burden of student debt from the American People

As the Biden administration continues to waver back and forth on student debt relief the amount of people trapped within the cycle of drastically increasing tuition and rising dues continues to grow. There is now more than 1.5 trillion dollars’ worth of student debt in America, and it continues to follow borrowers well into their 40’s- the average time to pay off debt is 21 years. This is an unbearable burden that places crushing weight on over 43 million American citizens, including one-third of all young adults.

The average debt at graduation is over $25,000, not to mention those affected by debt who have not graduated and are unable to because of the pressure those loans put on them. The rising cost of tuition has put intense pressure on both the young and old who wish to further their education, and especially African-Americans and people of color, who are nearly four times more likely to default than their white peers.

There must be relief. The debate has been going on for long enough, and while total forgiveness would be ideal, partial forgiveness up to a certain dollar amount would be a decent, and perhaps necessary starting point. Regardless of the amount, relief must arrive, and it must arrive soon.

Sign below and demand that the Biden Administration make strides to end this financial burden.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Cardona,

As the Biden Administration nears one year in office, student debt relief continues to be discussed, tossed back and forth between the White House and Congress. President Biden and yourself say that this is a priority, and yet we have seen minimal legislation or change on a broad scale. Actions speak louder than words, and we need to see some action towards relieving the crushing debt that has affected millions of American citizens.

Student debt relief is often used as a tool in the political game, but it is not a game for those affected by the now more than $1.6 trillion worth of loans, especially African Americans and People of Color who are far more likely to be hurt by these crushing loans and the soaring costs of tuition. The American people need meaningful relief, and they need it soon.

Please, relieve the constant burden of student debt from the shoulders of citizens who look to you.

Sincerely,
