Success: City Reservoir & Drinking Water Protected from Fracking

Target: Dan Horrigan, Mayor, Akron, OH

Goal: Applaud decision to abandon plans to frack area surrounding reservoir in Akron, Ohio.

After outcry from the public and those who signed this ForceChange petition, the City of Akron has abandoned plans to lease land to a natural gas company that sought to frack the area near the city’s reservoir. Applaud the mayor and city council for this decision to put public health before profit.

“I’ve listened to a lot of the concerns from both people inside of Akron and outside, and a significant amount of concern on Akron City Council, and I have decided to withdraw the LaDue oil and gas proposal from the Akron City Council agenda at this time,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. “There won’t be a vote on it. We’re not moving forward, definitively, with the project.”

Over 475 acres of city-owned land were slated to be leased to a natural gas company. This land was near the LaDue Reservoir and just upstream from the Cuyahoga River, which provides the city’s drinking water supply. By abandoning this project, the health of the environment and the city of Akron have been protected. Sign the petition to thank Mayor Horrigan for this action.

Dear Mayor Horrigan,

Thank you for listening to your constituents and public health officials and abandoning plans to lease city land to a private company for oil and natural gas drilling. The act of fracking has proven to pollute drinking water and the environment. The health of millions could have been put at risk.

I applaud you for putting public health before profit. Thank you for your efforts.
