Success: Horrific Treatment of Defenseless Refugees Under Investigation

Target: Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman of the European Union

Goal: Applaud the launch of investigations into charges of extensive violence, torture, and robbery of refugees.

An independent investigation has been launched to protect the rights of refugees and to determine the truth behind multiple accusations of human rights violations by Croatian police and auxiliaries. This is a welcome development for rights advocates and those who signed this petition. Croatia’s border is a popular crossing spot for refugees fleeing shocking violence and devastation in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas affected by political upheaval, civil war, and religious extremism.

According to refugees, they escaped these horrors only to be met at the gateway to Europe and asylum by Croatian forces funded by the European Union and given tacit approval to turn back migrants by any means necessary. Refugees report instances of systematic robbery, harassment, and verbal and physical abuse including beatings. Those seemingly targeted include children and the old as well as healthy adults.

European Union Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly’s investigation into these charges is an encouraging signal that not even the Commission is free to allow horrific human rights violations. Sign the letter below to applaud this vital decision.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. O’Reilly,

Over the course of the European refugee crisis, numerous allegations have been made that migrants have been subjected to shocking abuse and mistreatment. There is even evidence that, desperate to avoid scandal, the European Commission worked to cover up the violent behavior of Croatian border forces even while continuing to fund their operations.

Your decision to investigate these claims is a much-needed sign that, no matter how powerful, no European agency or leader is immune to justice or international laws protecting the rights of humans of all origins. Thank you for initiating this investigation and for working to ensure justice is served.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

This treatment of desperate people, many fleeing for their lives from unimaginable horrors, were crimes against humanity. Thank you for addressing this.
