Investigate Vicious Attacks on Refugees

Target: Fabrice Leggeri, Director, European Border and Coast Guard Agency

Goal: Investigate charges of horrific abuses aimed at refugees on the Croatian border.

Dozens of asylum seekers in Bosnia and Croatia have claimed that Croatian police and border guards subjected them to beatings, torture, and sexual assault. The refugees, from countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Morocco, have reportedly faced extreme violence from Croatian forces as they attempt to flee war, discrimination, and instability in their home countries. Many claimed that they were forced to strip naked at the border before their clothing was burned and their possessions, including mobile phones, power banks, and meager savings, were stolen before they were supposedly beaten with sticks, metal bars, belts, and fists.

Although Croatia’s Ministry of the Interior has denied any wrongdoing, the extensive photographic evidence suggests otherwise. Any possibility of violence committed by Croatian border forces, who receive funding from the European Union and are subject to its regulations and the European Commission on Human Rights, cannot be allowed to continue. Sign the petition below to demand that these charges be investigated immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Leggeri,

Claims of horrific violence committed against vulnerable asylum seekers have once more drawn attention to the possibility of brutality at the Croatian border. After investigations by numerous human rights groups have produced extensive photographic evidence and written testimonies, the allegations against Croatian police are extremely worrisome and suggest that Croatian authorities are unwilling or unable to protect refugees from harm.

As one of the leading security organs in the European Union, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency has a clear duty to investigate these claims and, if necessary, to intervene on behalf of asylum seekers to guarantee their safety. I demand that you begin an investigation into these charges immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
