Success: Migratory Birds Protected Against Slaughter

Target: Mitchell Bernard, Executive Director and Chief Counsel of The National Resources Defense Counsel

Goal: Thank those who fought to protect migratory birds from legal killing.

Migratory birds will now be safe from inconsequential killing, thanks to the efforts of wildlife activists and conservationists. An official ruling has upheld the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which protects more than 1,000 bird species. Congratulate the environmentalists who fought for this victory and those who signed this ForceChange petition.

“It is not only a sin to kill a mockingbird, it is also a crime.” This line, taken from the acclaimed novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” was quoted by Judge Valerie Caproni as she ruled against President Trump’s lethal interpretation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The administration made clear their intent to criminalize only affirmative acts of violence against migratory birds, not incidental acts which still caused just as much harm. This could have resulted in a countless number of bird deaths with no legal consequence. Thankfully, advocates stepped in on behalf of these innocent lives.

Sign below and thank one of the organizations that fought this battle in court and won.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bernard,

Millions of migratory birds are now safer, thanks to your efforts to curb the Trump administration’s intent to decriminalize their deaths. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act stands strong, after the most recent court ruling, and any bird that comes to harm, even in incidental circumstances, has the potential to receive justice in a court of law.

This is a massive victory for conservationists and wildlife activists, as well as migratory birds everywhere. I am grateful that you took up this fight to save innocent lives.

Sincerely,
