Success: New York Police Department to Disband Violent Anti-Crime Unit

Target: Dermot F. Shea, New York City Police Commissioner

Goal: Applaud the New York City police commissioner for disbanding the department’s anti-crime unit, which has been involved in several fatal shootings.

The New York Police Department’s (NYPD) anti-crime “plainclothes” unit will be disbanded thanks to a recent decision made by police commissioner Dermot Shea. This comes after weeks of nationwide protests surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd, police brutality and systematic racism. More information regarding the fight for widespread police reform is found in this petition.

NYPD’s anti-crime, or plainclothes unit has been involved in some of New York City’s most notorious killings and has received a disproportionate number of civilian complaints. Members of NYPD have recently spoken up about how this unit represents an outdated model of “brute force” that often pits the officers against the communities they work in.

Dismantling the anti-crime unit is a huge step in the right direction toward properly addressing police brutality and re-investing in communities that have been historically over-policed. Sign below to thank Mr. Shae for dismantling the anti-crime unit and working to address police brutality.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Shea,

Your decision to dismantle the anti-crime unit is a huge victory for the Black Lives Matter movement, symbolizing your efforts to address police brutality and stand in solidarity with the oppressed.

However, the work is not done. I understand that upwards of 600 plainclothes officers are being reassigned to different departments. You must ensure that violent policing is not simply being moved elsewhere. It must be eradicated completely.

Thank you for dismantling the anti-crime unit and working to properly address police brutality.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
