Success: House Coal and Wood Burning to be Phased Out

Target: The Right Honourable George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Goal: Praise United Kingdom for plans to phase out coal and wood burning in homes.

The United Kingdom will be phasing out sales of wet wood and coal as household fuels over the next three years, according to a recent report. Remaining retail stocks of these fuels will be parceled out slowly and in small amounts, with advice being given on how to dry wet wood to prevent pollution.

For over a decade, coal fires and wood-burning stoves have been responsible for a large chunk of air pollution across the country. Poor air quality has led to people falling ill from respiratory complications, many even dying as a result. Studies have shown that the pollutants from these fuels cause heart and other circulatory diseases. Petitions such as this one have circulated, demanding parts of the UK stop their use of wood stoves and coal fires.

This is a very important step in the fight for cleaner air across the UK. Sign this petition to thank the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for helping us claim a victory in this fight.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Eustice,

Thank you for enabling the phasing out of coal and wet wood as household fuels. For over a decade, these fuels have been responsible for a huge chunk of the UK’s air pollution problems, causing heart and respiratory diseases and even death among hundreds of people. The UK has relied on them for the ease and the nostalgia factor, but their time is past.

This is an important victory in the fight for clean air across the UK, and you have helped make it possible. Thank you for helping to improve both the quality of air and life for citizens across the country. It is hoped that other countries still relying on coal or wet wood will soon follow your example.

Sincerely,
