The state that was ground zero for the measles epidemic, Washington, has recognized calls for action and implemented an important safeguard that could save children’s lives.
Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill into law that requires mandatory vaccinations for children attending public schools. The beefed-up legislation specifically addresses the MMR vaccine, which targets measles, mumps, and rubella. Students without the vaccine will be held from class until they receive the vaccine upon a parent or guardian’s notification. Exemptions for personal or philosophical reasons will no longer be permitted, diminishing the damage of the “anti-vaxxer” movement. To encourage vaccinations, many schools will offer free vaccination clinics.

However, this has led to the best of possible public health outcomes with the mandatory vaccination law. Thank you for using governmental support and authority to prevent another public health disaster.
The stronger vaccination guidelines for public schools can not only shield children directly but can also provide an umbrella of protection for those children who cannot receive vaccinations. These vulnerable young people should not have to suffer or possibly die because of the choices of adults. Offering free vaccination clinics will help ensure that no child is left behind in this important public health initiative.
