Success: Child-Separating Detention Center Closes

Target: Margaret Huang, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA

Goal: Support the closure of children’s immigrant detention centers that separate kids from parents.

The forced confinement of immigrant children by the federal government quickly became one of the driving news stories of 2019. Petitions like this one circulated that brought needed attention to the issue. As the year closes, the U.S. will have one less government-sponsored prison for kids.

When the Carrizo Springs emergency children’s detention center opened in Texas, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services expected the facility to remain in business well into 2020 and likely beyond. 1,500 children largely from Central America were expected to fill this confined space, many having been separated from their parents. Likely due to persistent public pressure, the department abruptly shuttered this facility and reunited many of the displaced kids with their families.

Sign this petition to thank one of the staunchest advocates of these children for persistence in achieving a just, humane outcome.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Huang,

The number of children traumatized by the Carrizo Springs detention center stayed at a minimum, thanks in large part to your advocacy. You helped spare hundreds more the pain of isolation and exclusion from their families. The closure of this facility is an important win for immigrant rights and your role is highly appreciated.

We hope that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will reflect on its actions, as it did in this case, and adopt more humane policies. The continued tactics of the Trump administration to detain families indefinitely cannot stand. The shuttering of this emergency center represents a needed victory in the ongoing battle for the most fundamental human rights.

We support and appreciate your contributions to this important cause.

Sincerely,
