Success: Toxic Polluting Diesel Emissions Banned

Target: Kye Dudd, Bristol City Councillor for Transport, Energy & New Green Deal

Goal: Support diesel vehicle ban that curbs air pollution.

Bristol has earned a cleaner, life-saving honor: the first UK city to impose a ban on toxic diesel-fueled motor vehicles. Air pollution helps cause an estimated 23,000 deaths per year in the United Kingdom. The city of Bristol in England has long held the dirty distinction of being one of the most polluted cities in the entire region. As brought to attention in this ForceChange petition, a promising plan to cut destructive diesel pollution was recently proposed. Now, thanks in large part to sustained pressure from advocates, it has become a reality.

Specifically, the new law will prohibit most diesel vehicles (exempting emergency vehicles) from traveling the city’s roads during peak daytime hours. The poisonous nitrogen dioxide emitted from these vehicles has propelled Bristol past legally safe air quality limits for years. These toxins can damage every cell in the living beings who inhale them.

Sign this petition to thank the city’s council for finally taking a positive step to address its pollution crisis.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Councillor Dudd,

The city council’s vote on the diesel vehicle ban will help move this city in the right direction. Bristol’s air quality should significantly improve. Most importantly, tens of thousands of lives may be saved in the long-term.

Though the work is not done, and more avenues must be explored for sustained environmental wellness, this is a huge step in the direction of cleaner air and healthier living. May this decision prove to be a template for other towns and cities besieged by increasing environmental dangers.

Thank you for listening to the public and taking measures to address an ongoing pollution crisis within Bristol and across the entire United Kingdom.

Sincerely,
