Success: Man Who Savagely Beat Dog Gets Jail Time

Target: Dave Toska, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Toledo, Ohio

Goal: Praise Toledo’s prosecuting attorney for seeking jailtime in his case against the man who beat and abused a dog.

Kashif Watkins was accused of animal cruelty in May after a video showed him beating and carrying a dog by the scruff of the neck surfaced in the media. Now, Watkins has been convicted by the Toledo Municipal Court and sentenced to jailtime. Praise the chief prosecuting attorney and all of those involved in bringing justice to this poor dog.

“For [Mr. Watkins’] case to go all the way through to the point where he’s actually been given jail time is so unusual. From a standpoint of the community and what this means in the community, it’s incredibly positive,” stated Jean Keating, a local welfare advocate. Judge Michelle Wagner presided over Watkins’ case and determined that the abuse of this animal was overt and malicious, leading her to assign him the harsher sentence.

Watkins has been sentenced to 30 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, an additional 30 days on electronic monitoring, and one year of probation during which he is not to possess any animals and is to undergo a mental-health assessment and take anger-management classes. This is a victory for animal welfare advocates!

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prosecutor Toska,

I commend you on your hard-fought victory in the case Kashif Watkins. The actions that you took convinced Judge Wagner that this dog’s tragic suffering called for justice beyond the usual slap-on-the-wrist. Because of you, Watkins will serve 30 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio and an additional 30 days on electronic monitoring. Then he will be put on one year of probation, wherein he will not be allowed to possess any animals.

Thank you for all of your hard work on behalf of this dog. This victory shows all animal welfare advocates that justice is possible and that one dog’s health and wellbeing is worthy of the harshest punishment in the court of law.

Sincerely,

  3. gen agustsson says:

why not jail the rest of the criminals?

  4. 60 days that’s a joke!! He deserves way longer at least a year if not longer, when are they going to show these abusers that the people will not tolerate it? Just by the way he’s carrying that poor dog is causing it pain.. I think judges need to look harder at the abuse and judge the sentences harder and longer.

  5. Cette pourriture doit payer et tous les tortionnaires d’animaux devrait être condamné à mort

  6. He deserved a lot longer than 60 days.
