Success: California Overturns Past Cannabis Convictions

Target: Bill Monning, Majority Leader, California State Senate

Goal: Commend California for turning over past cannabis convictions.

When California legalized cannabis in 2016, many cheered, but thousands were still behind bars, sleeping on concrete blocks because they had used or had something to do with cannabis in the last 20 years. Their futures remained undecided even as millions cheered in the streets, but now they have the opportunity to return to regular life outside of prison. California lawmakers voted on a measure that would overturn criminal convictions related to cannabis, freeing up many nonviolent offenders and allowing families to be complete again.

Successes like this are the true mark of cannabis legalization’s value. Innocent cannabis consumers should have never been imprisoned in the first place and now we have the opportunity to ensure that never happens again, while taking care of those who were afflicted by the law before. PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Monning,

Thank you for taking a necessary first step in tipping the scales back to the side of justice, by freeing prisoners in jail for pre-legalization cannabis-related crimes. Cannabis convictions have ruined many lives in the past and their expungement is a necessary part of the legalization process. Moves like this prove that the state cares about the livelihood of their citizens and the future of the state economy.

What is good for the citizen will be good for the state and we need members of society participating, we can’t have that if they’re in jail for smoking weed. We hope to see more victories like this out of the state and the rest of the country!

Sincerely,
