Success: Policeman Accused of Shooting Unarmed Teen Fired and Charged With Murder

Target: Sheriff Lupe Valdez, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office

Goal: Support the firing of and arrest warrant for the officer who allegedly shot and killed Jordan Edwards.

A white police officer reportedly shot an unarmed black teenager who was a passenger in a car driving away from a house party, and thanks in part to public outcry and petitions like this one at ForceChange, he will be held responsible for his actions. The officer, Roy Oliver, has been fired, and is being charged with murder, as the Sheriff’s Office stated there is evidence that he “intended to cause serious bodily injury and commit an act clearly dangerous to human life that caused the death of an individual.”

Police were responding to a report of underage drinking at a house party when Roy Oliver allegedly fired a rifle into the car in which 15-year-old Jordan Edwards was a passenger, killing him with a shot to the back of the head. Initially, police said that the car was “aggressively” reversing toward the officers, but later admitted this was not the case, and that in fact the car was driving away from police and the house. Sign below to support these steps to hold Roy Oliver responsible for his unnecessary use of lethal force on an African American teen, and to give justice to Jordan Edwards and his family.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Valdez,

Thank you for giving Jordan Edwards and his family the justice they deserve, and refusing to stand by and allow police to kill unarmed African Americans — especially children — without consequences.

Jordan Edwards was only 15 years old, and did not deserve to be shot to death. The officer who allegedly shot him, Roy Oliver, had no reason to kill him. I support the decision to fire Roy Oliver and to charge him with the murder of Jordan Edwards.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
