Thanks to petitions like ForceChange’s Don’t Withhold Funding From Sanctuary Cities, a federal judge has blocked an executive order signed by Donald Trump that threatened to withhold funding from American sanctuary cities. The order suggested that cities that were not complying with federal immigration regulations could have federal money withheld from them.
San Francisco’s U.S. District Judge William Orrick was behind the block, issuing injunctions for lawsuits by the city of San Francisco and Santa Clara County. Orrick ruled that the president cannot set new, coercive conditions for granting federal funding, saying, “Federal funding that bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement cannot be threatened merely because a jurisdiction chooses an immigration enforcement strategy of which the president disapproves.”
This ruling is another success in the face of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies. Sanctuary cities provide important protections for American immigrants, and this attempt to use coercion against those cities has failed.
