Don’t Withhold Funding From Sanctuary Cities

Target: Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Goal: Do not withhold federal funding from American sanctuary cities.

Sanctuary cities across the U.S. are being threatened with severe funding cuts by the Trump administration. The White House has cracked down on deportation policies since Donald Trump assumed the presidency. The federal government’s new stance on immigration has put more immigrants in danger of being deported. In the wake of these sweeping changes, sanctuary cities across the United States have become even more important. Sanctuary cities have practices in place that shield criminals from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and prohibit agencies from complying with detainers from ICE.

The Justice Department recently wrote notice letters to at least eight sanctuary cities that are failing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The cities must submit proof that they are following federal immigration law, and the letters warn that federal grant funding could be withheld from cities that fail to comply. Cities on the list include New York, Philadelphia, Miami and Chicago.

Sanctuary cities provide important protection to immigrants, and in some cases, prevent immigrants from being detained or deported even when they have committed a minor, nonviolent crime. The threat of withholding federal funding from these cities is unethical and ignores the complex nature of immigration policies in the United States. Sign the below petition to oppose the Justice Department’s decision and voice your support for sanctuary cities.

Dear Attorney General Sessions,

The Justice Department recently issued a written warning to several American sanctuary cities, ordering them to comply with federal immigration regulations and threatening to withhold public funds if they failed to do so. Sanctuary cities provide important protection for immigrants in a political environment that is increasingly dangerous for them.

The attempt to intimidate these communities by threatening to withhold funding is unethical and inappropriate. To financially blackmail cities that are trying to protect immigrants is to ignore the complexities of immigration policy in the United States. Sanctuary cities make this country a safer place for immigrants who are in danger of being separated from their families thanks to this administration’s harsh stance on immigration.

I urge you to reconsider the warning issued to these cities. Immigrants are an integral part of this country’s identity, and sanctuary cities should not be punished for combatting the bigotry-based immigration policies enacted by Donald Trump.

  1. They are breaking the law and so they do not deserve to receive funding.

  2. not following the law, do not expect tax payer money.

  3. Withholding money from sanctuary cities is the least of this country’s problems in trying to deal with this administration. Cutting funds from EPA and proposing cuts from health care just to mention a few should put America on alert. This is an insane administration full of sycophants and scare mongers from the top on down. When people talk about breaking the law, they should look no further than the POTUS.
