Target: U.S. Department of Justice attorney John Keller
Goal: Praise attempts to punish racist sheriff for his repeated profiling and persecution of the Latino community.
A racist sheriff is facing a tough legal battle after Department of Justice officials announced their intentions to pursue charges. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be charged with criminal contempt after DOJ officials alleged that he violated a federal court’s orders in a case involving racial profiling.
Arpaio has already gained a reputation as an extremely racist sheriff. He has a long history of abusing the Latino community, including the now-infamous Tent City, a prison built specifically for undocumented immigrants. Under Arpaio’s orders, officers in Maricopa routinely profiled Latinos during traffic stops and demanded their citizenship papers.
The case against Arpaio is detailed in this ForceChange petition. A U.S. District Judge ordered Arpaio to immediately cease his racist actions, but the order had little effect. Arpaio’s refusal to recognize higher authority has led to these new charges, which will hopefully help end this shameful legacy of oppression and prejudice.
Sheriff Arpaio has shown time and time again that his racist beliefs are more important to him than upholding the constitution. Sign the petition below and thank DOJ officials for their efforts to stop this hateful man from causing further harm.
Dear Mr. Keller,
I am writing to commend you and the rest of your department for your decision to pursue charges against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Sheriff Arpaio is notorious for his racist legacy and constant profiling of the Latino community, and your efforts to bring this man to justice are an encouraging sign that justice will be served.
In light of Arpaio’s denial of wrongdoing, these charges are more necessary than ever. Rather than admit to any transgressions, Arpaio continues to endorse and carry out his racist beliefs in direct violation of federal law. Such an unrepentant man deserves to be reprimanded for his ignorant views, and these new charges should help put a stop to the unjust targeting of minorities.
