Target: U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow
Goal: Reprimand Sheriff Joe Arpaio for defying the court order to stop profiling Latinos.
Arizona’s six-term Sheriff Joe Arpaio has denied a court order to stop profiling Latinos that was issued two years ago. This man is notorious for his corruption, contempt of the courts and unapologetic racism toward Latinos. Arpaio doesn’t see Latinos as people, but rather as an infestation he must eradicate, and holds no respect for any authority that tries to stop him. The court is currently deciding if it should hold Arpaio in contempt of court for violating its order.
Two years ago, U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow ruled that it was unconstitutional for Arpaio to systematically profile Latinos during traffic stops and demand their citizenship papers. Arpaio not only did not stop doing this, but he openly bragged about it. “After [the Justice Department] went after me, we arrested 500 more just for spite,” he told supporters in Houston, Texas. This is not the first time the arrogant sheriff has disobeyed higher orders; in 2012, he refused to acknowledge the temporary immunity from imprisonment and deportation granted to immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.
Tim Casey, Arpaio’s own attorney, stopped representing his client, citing that Arpaio refused to listen to his direction and would deliberately violate their agreements. Casey testified against Arpaio during the current contempt case, claiming Arpaio continued searching for loopholes in conducting the traffic stops against Latinos, despite Casey telling him it was illegal.
Arpaio has a long history of abuses towards Latinos, the most famous being Tent City, his prison built for undocumented immigrants. For the past 20 years, the inmates there have been forced to live under tarps, wear pink underwear and crack rocks in the harsh desert heat. He’s punished inmates with limited English for speaking Spanish and conducted workplace raids that target Latinos. While Arpaio keeps himself busy harassing Latinos and gloating about his notoriety to his conservative fan base, hundreds of sexual abuse cases have gone unnoticed in his district.
Arpaio is making a mockery of the court and must be put in his place. Urge Judge Snow to hold the racist Sheriff accountable for his defiance so he knows the court is serious about stopping his unconstitutional harassment of Latinos.
Dear Judge Snow,
The recent charge against Sheriff Joe Arpaio for contempt of the court is not his first act of defiance and will not be his last unless he’s shown that his twisted idealism is not the final authority. Arpaio is a threat to the civil rights of Latinos and refuses to take orders from the President and the Supreme Court. The court must guarantee that he understands he’s not above the law.
Given his track record, it is safe to say Arpaio intentionally defied the court order. He’s previously ignored a federal monitor that was supposed to ensure his office was complying with the order. He’s stretched the crime of identity theft beyond legal limitations, arresting over 800 Latinos during workplace raids, and illegally denied bail to undocumented immigrants. He’s retaliated against public officials, jailed newspaper executives, protesters and a state judge on illegitimate charges. He’s very open about his contempt for Latinos, the court, and any one who tries getting in his way.
Sheriff Arpaio shows no respect to anyone except himself. He is a bully who was given a badge. Please do not allow this bigot to continue his limitless destructive path–hold him in contempt of the court.
