Success: Racist, Misogynistic Sheriff’s Chief of Staff Resigns

Target: The ForceChange Community

Goal: Applaud the resignation of a police official who sent racist and sexist emails at work.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s “Fire Racist, Misogynistic Sheriff’s Chief of Staff,” the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department chief of staff, Tom Angel, has resigned. His resignation comes after it was reported that at his former position with the Burbank Police Department he sent racist and sexist emails that had jokes about African Americans, Latinos, Muslims and women.

Although Angel was not fired as he should have been, public outcry was enough for him to step down from his position. Angel’s excuse when the emails became public was that everyone forwards emails. He apologized for offending people but said his intent was not for the public to have seen the jokes.

This is someone whose very job is to protect and serve the public, and he chose to show his racist, bigoted true colors. He let people in the community know how he really feels about some of the groups of people he’s supposed to protect. We let him know that’s not acceptable. Applaud that this racist, sexist man will no longer hold a position in the police department.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear members of the ForceChange community,

Thanks to your activism, a racist, misogynistic man will no longer hold his high-level position at the Los Angeles Police Department. Tom Angel sent emails from his work account that made racist jokes about African Americans, Latinos and Muslims and sexist jokes about women. Someone like this should not hold a position of such power.

Because of our efforts, this man felt enough pressure to resign. Applaud that action was taken to fight racism and misogyny in the police department.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
