Target: Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
Goal: End the cruel live horse export trade that subjects horses to long journeys without food or water before eventual slaughter.
The ongoing live horse export trade in Canada subjects thousands of horses to inhumane treatment and gruesome conditions. Over the past five years, despite a promise from the Liberal Party to ban live horse exports for slaughter, more than 12,500 horses have been reported shipped and brutally slaughtered overseas. These animals are forced into overcrowded wooden crates and endure agonizing journeys lasting up to 28 hours without access to food, water, or rest, leading to severe dehydration, stress, and injuries. This dire situation necessitates immediate action to prevent further suffering.
Investigations have shown that the horses, before their transport, are confined in feedlots, and once loaded for shipment, face extreme overcrowding and neglect. Investigations have indicated that ships routinely exceed legal travel limits, violating even the minimal protections afforded to these animals. Horses suffer from fatal dehydration, injuries, and even miscarriages due to the stress of this transport. It is ethically unconscionable for Canada to continue allowing such barbarism under the guise of economic benefit.
The public outcry against this inhumane practice grows louder, with the majority of Canadians demanding that the government fulfills its long-standing promise to end live horse exports. There is no justification for the government to fail to act when a simple update of regulations would halt this cruel industry. It is imperative to implement the necessary changes without delay and to safeguard the welfare of these sentient beings.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Prime Minister Carney,
The live export trade of horses from Canada has subjected these vulnerable animals to extreme suffering and cruelty, with shocking accounts of overcrowding and neglect during transport. Horses endure agonizing journeys in wooden crates, legally lasting up to 28 hours without food, water, or rest, which has led to severe physical and psychological stress, injuries, and deaths. More than 12,500 horses have already been shipped and slaughtered internationally since your party promised to end this abhorrent practice—or tolerate it no longer.
It is disturbing that, despite the Liberal Party’s commitment during the last federal election to enact meaningful change, the live horse export trade has continued unabated, causing unnecessary harm to countless animals. The evidence of their suffering is irrefutable, and investigations have shown a clear disregard for their well-being. Changing regulations is not only a moral imperative but an obligation to uphold the values we are meant to represent as a nation.
We urge you to take immediate action by updating the federal regulations to put an end to this cruel industry once and for all. Canada must be a leader in the ethical treatment of animals, and it is time to fulfill the promise to protect the welfare of horses being subjected to this horrific trade.
Sincerely,
