Target: Themistos Arnaoutis, Chief of Police, Cyprus
Goal: Strengthen investigations of alleged animal poisonings and support prosecution of anyone proven to have placed lethal bait.
A piece of food can become a lethal trap when someone deliberately adds poison. Alleged animal poisonings now feature in twenty-five cases registered with courts, according to police reporting. Each case calls for evidence capable of establishing what happened to the animal and who, if anyone, is criminally responsible.
Police recorded 208 animal abuse investigations involving 218 alleged offenses between January and October. The poisoning concerns include allegations of toxic bait threatening companion and community animals. Court registration must not be confused with conviction, and it does not establish that every suspect remains unidentified.
Forensic work can turn concern into a case that prosecutors can assess. Timely sampling, veterinary findings, and witness evidence deserve sustained resources. Demand coordinated poisoning investigations, clear public reporting routes, and appropriate prosecution of substantiated offenses.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Chief Arnaoutis,
Please ensure that animal poisoning receives consistent specialist attention across your force. The twenty-five poisoning cases registered with courts underline the importance of following evidence through each stage. We ask that investigators establish the substance involved, its connection to each animal’s condition, and any evidence of deliberate placement.
Coordinate officers, veterinarians, and laboratories so that samples and suspected bait are collected safely and preserved correctly. Where evidence supports the inquiry, examine nearby recordings, interview witnesses, and trace relevant purchases. Please also provide residents with a clear way to report suspicious food and advise them against handling potentially hazardous material themselves. Prompt professional assessment can protect other animals while preserving useful evidence.
Give prosecuting authorities complete files and pursue every supported avenue of accountability. Where intentional poisoning is proven, support penalties reflecting the seriousness of the conduct and its consequences. Publish appropriate updates about completed investigations and verified hazards without compromising active cases. Please make effective enforcement a sustained priority, with sufficient resources for difficult cases and protection for animals that have no owner to press their cause.
Sincerely,
