Stop Overfishing as Mackerel Stocks Plummet

Target: Carl O’Brien, President, International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

Goal: Hold mackerel fishing nations accountable for overfishing and prevent further decline of fish stocks.

Europe’s fish stocks are in severe jeopardy, with dynamic fisheries management being undermined by rampant overfishing practices among key fishing nations. A coalition of leading seafood businesses, the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA), has raised alarms regarding the overfishing of mackerel, highlighting that these countries have persistently ignored scientific recommendations. Alarmingly, since 2014, mackerel stocks have declined by over 10 million tons, indicating a critical situation that threatens marine ecosystems and the viability of coastal communities reliant on these resources.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea has suggested a maximum sustainable yield that could double catch limits due to recent population trends; however, NAPA warns that fishing nations cannot misinterpret this good fortune as a long-term solution. With catch limits having been set 39 percent above scientific recommendations on average from 2020 to 2024, there exists a substantial risk of depleting stocks below viable levels if quick action is not taken. Furthermore, retailers have started holding the fishing industry accountable, with some major chains threatening to pull mackerel from their shelves if unsustainable practices persist.

This demand for immediate action is crucial; the future of mackerel not only affects fish populations but also the businesses and communities dependent on them. Inaction now could push these species towards collapse, further endangering marine ecosystems and economic stability in the region. It is vital that the FAO and international politicians enforce binding agreements ensuring sustainable fishing practices, thereby safeguarding our oceans and the livelihoods linked to them.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President O’Brien,

Europe’s mackerel stocks face a dire crisis due to the harmful practices of multiple fishing nations that have disregarded scientific recommendations for years. These nations have collectively overfished mackerel, leading to an alarming decline of over 10 million tons since 2014. The recent warning issued by the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group stresses the crucial need for sustainable practices, as maintaining current levels of catch beyond scientific advice risks the collapse of this vital marine species.

The coalition of seafood businesses is calling for accountability and immediate action from countries like Norway, Iceland, members of the E.U., and Russia to implement effective management and adhere to scientific catch limits. Current practices, which have been found to consistently exceed recommendations, threaten not only fish populations but also the coastal communities and businesses reliant on these resources for their survival. In light of upcoming negotiations, there must be decisive measures taken to prevent further unsustainable fishing.

It is imperative that your office emphasizes the urgent need for a binding, long-term management plan to protect mackerel and other vulnerable species. The future of marine ecosystems and countless livelihoods depends on the collective commitment to sustainable fishing practices. All parties must be held accountable to prevent this crisis from escalating further.

Sincerely,
