Stop Prioritizing Corporate Dairy Interests Over Farmers

Target: U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins

Goal: Hold dairy cooperatives accountable for allegedly prioritizing corporate interests over farmer welfare.

For decades, the dairy industry has been plagued by troubling trends of consolidation, leaving many smaller farms struggling and pushing them out of business. Significant industry shifts have resulted in industrial-scale farms—those with at least 2,500 cows—now accounting for nearly half of all U.S. milk sales. This alarming shift has not only affected individual farmers but has also transformed dairy cooperatives from farmer-focused organizations into corporate entities, raising serious concerns about conflicts of interest and accountability.

The drastic reduction in the number of dairy co-ops, from over 1,900 in 1952 to merely 107 in 2023, is a shocking indicator that should not be overlooked. Prominent giants like Dairy Farmers of America, Land O’Lakes, and California Dairies now dominate around 83% of milk sales, effectively sidelining the very farmers they were created to support. Furthermore, there are allegations that some of these cooperatives have engaged in questionable practices by purchasing processing companies that compete with the farmers, leading to a potential loss of control for the producers. This alarming development underscores the need for systemic change in how these cooperatives operate.

To protect the livelihood of dairy farmers and promote fair practices, it is essential to implement appropriate punishment for any cooperative engaging in conflicts of interest that adversely impact farmers. The time has come to demand accountability for these concerning practices that threaten the integrity of the dairy industry and endanger the futures of hardworking farmers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

The alarming consolidation in the dairy industry and the conflicts of interest within dairy cooperatives call for immediate intervention. With the vast majority of U.S. milk sales now controlled by just a few entities, many farmers feel they have lost control over their livelihoods, and this is not only unacceptable but detrimental to the industry’s integrity. The transformation of cooperatives into corporate-like entities has raised red flags and allegations from farmers, who reportedly face overwhelming challenges in navigating these changes.

It is critical to understand the stakes of this situation. The continuous reduction in the number of dairy cooperatives and the rise of larger-scale operations have reportedly led to fewer choices and secured futures for the farmers who depend on them. When cooperatives begin to prioritize their business interests over those of the farmers they serve, the very foundation of dairy farming is placed at risk. Many farmers are already struggling under rising costs while also facing this overwhelming market control, creating an urgent need for equitable practices in the industry.

Therefore, we urge you to take action against any dairy cooperatives found to be operating with conflicts of interest that harm farmers and to ensure these entities are held accountable for their alleged transgressions. The future of dairy farming depends on it.

Sincerely,
