Goal: Urge end to arbitrary ban on press coverage from select media outlets.
A legal fight has recently brewed concerning the freedom of the press granted by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Recently, the Trump administration abruptly banned three major media outlets – CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, from covering White House and presidential events because of what the administration deemed unfavorable news coverage. In response, five outlets that comprised the White House press pool decided in solidarity to rescind their participation in coverage. Despite a legal order mandating the reinstatement of press credentials, White House officials still reportedly rebuffed the order. Previous controversies erupted when the president tried to limit access for members of the Associated Press for their refusal to acknowledge his attempted name change of the Gulf of Mexico.
While the latest row could be viewed as a political distraction taking coverage away from other major issues, it is far from a harmless maneuver. Threats to the press are often one of the first moves of authoritarian regimes worldwide. Major government crackdowns on press freedom have recently emerged in Tunisia and Slovakia, for example. The World Press Freedom Index marked 2026 as the lowest year for global media liberty in over 25 years, with 60 percent of nations experiencing deteriorating or “very serious” press freedom conditions. Even media cartoonists are being targeted.
The United States cannot slide toward totalitarian rule by a thousand cuts. Sign the petition below to demand elected leaders respect and reinforce the First Amendment and all freedoms that it embodies.

Dear Director Cheung,
Press freedom worldwide is at its lowest level in 25 years. The United States should never be leading the conversation on a restriction that strikes at the very heart of its Constitutional values. A free press – and the free flow of information – is part of the lifeblood of a democracy. Without the freedoms granted by the First Amendment, this nation ceases to fulfill the legacy established 250 years ago.
Do not mar America’s birthday by making this the year it abandons and willfully surrenders its democratic principles. Persuade the president to lift the press ban, and end the crackdown on open dialogue.
