This ForceChange petition encouraged more investments in sun-powered solar energy as a means of shifting away from environmentally damaging fossils fuels. According to a recent report, solar accounted for roughly 12.8 percent of the national energy supply. This steady rise firmly places solar energy as the third highest power provider in the country and the fastest-growing supplier of new power. The numbers are equally promising in Europe, where solar power – when combined with equally burgeoning wind power — now tops all fossil fuels for the continent’s energy generation. Solar is also powering some of the world’s most environmentally friendly technology, such as Ocean Cleanup’s garbage barges, which scoop up tons of plastic pollution from oceans and other waterways.
