Monkey’s Hand Crushed by Hidden Jaw Trap: Demand Accountability

Target: Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Cameroon

Goal: Identify and prosecute whoever planted the brutal metal jaw trap that crushed a Mona monkey’s hand so severely that surgeons were forced to amputate the limb.

A farmer heard the distressed cries of a Mona monkey near an agricultural clearing bordering protected rainforest. The primate was discovered with its right hand catastrophically injured by a crude, spring-loaded metal jaw trap concealed in the undergrowth. Medical examination revealed extensive bone fragmentation and developing tissue necrosis. The damage was so severe that wildlife surgeons had no option but to amputate the limb to save the monkey’s life.

Environmental police are investigating the incident as suspected illegal trapping and poaching within a protected ecological buffer zone. Authorities have not identified a suspect. Rangers are searching agricultural boundaries for additional traps that could endanger other primates and wildlife. Investigators have also appealed to local metalworkers and blacksmiths for information about anyone requesting heavy-duty spring mechanisms or customized wildlife jaw traps.

This method of trapping is indiscriminate. A concealed metal device cannot distinguish between its intended target and any other animal crossing its path. One monkey has already lost a limb. Authorities must locate any remaining traps, identify whoever deployed them, and ensure that appropriate prosecution follows once sufficient evidence establishes responsibility.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister,

The injuries recently suffered by a Mona monkey reveal the devastating consequences of illegal wildlife trapping. A concealed spring-loaded jaw trap crushed the animal’s hand, shattering the bones and causing tissue death severe enough to require surgical amputation.

The investigation must extend beyond this individual trap. Rangers are already searching for additional devices while authorities seek information about people commissioning specialized trapping mechanisms. Those efforts deserve sustained resources and urgent attention before another animal is maimed or killed.

Please ensure that every credible lead is investigated and all remaining illegal traps are removed. Once the evidence identifies whoever manufactured, placed, or knowingly used these devices for illegal poaching, authorities should pursue appropriate prosecution and penalties under applicable Cameroonian wildlife laws. This monkey will live permanently without a hand. The cruelty that caused such irreversible suffering demands justice.

Sincerely,
