Goal: Confront crisis of confidence in data centers and negative impacts on communities.
New York, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and Illinois: these regions represent just a small sampling of places that have cracked down on or even halted AI data center development. Altogether, over 60 billion dollars’ worth of such projects have been blocked in the United States. Surveys show a rising and bipartisan backlash against these massive structures used to power artificial intelligence, with some polls registering disapproval of building data centers in local communities at nearly 75 percent.
The resistance is fueled by many factors. Residents of areas already housing data centers report skyrocketing energy costs, since the centers place much higher demands on power grids. The centers’ massive water needs are also a cause of concern. Residents complain of constant noise and light pollution as well: intrusive disturbances to their quieter ways of life. As for pollution on a broader level, over 200 environmental organizations have called for a data center moratorium until strong federal regulations are in place. Unfortunately, politicians in charge are often turning in the opposite direction: greenlighting projects without much review and offering tax handouts to builders of these facilities.

Dear Senator Lee,
Americans are already skeptical and worried about the artificial intelligence boom because of potential detrimental impacts on job security and public security. Rather than engaging with these concerns in a meaningful way, U.S. leaders have instead doubled down and prioritized acceleration of these technologies and their equally worrisome infrastructure demands. At least 4,000 data centers currently populate the American landscape, with thousands more in the planning stages.
Residents directly impacted by these centers catalogue a long list of detrimental effects: noise pollution, light pollution, environmental costs, energy payment costs, water deficiency, and a loss of rural culture. Their reports are not overblown. Just for context, a single data center can have energy demands equivalent to a million households. In a few short years, data centers will require upwards of one-fifth of America’s electric grid to function.
Community protests and successful challenges have played out countrywide, in states with vastly different ways of life and political philosophies. This issue unites the people, and you would do well to listen. Support the calls for a rollback and moratorium on data center construction and, most importantly, create a regulatory framework that Americans can trust is built with their protection top of mind.
