From the outside, the property appeared to be an ordinary wildlife attraction. Inside, investigators allegedly discovered a far different reality: rows of rusted cages holding frightened moon bears that had endured years of extreme confinement and invasive procedures for profit.
According to publicly reported information, an international conservation task force working alongside Laotian authorities conducted an enforcement raid on a foreign-owned facility that had allegedly been operating as an illegal bear bile farm while presenting itself as a public zoo. Inspectors claim they found 27 Asiatic black bears confined in cramped metal cages with little opportunity for natural movement. Authorities further allege that the bears had been subjected to invasive, unsterilized surgical procedures to extract bile for the illegal traditional medicine trade.
Conservation organization Free the Bears safely relocated all surviving animals to a sanctuary, where veterinarians are documenting abdominal injuries and beginning long-term rehabilitation.
