Goal: Ensure that everyone responsible for capturing more than 100 community dogs with wire nooses and unlawfully relocating them is identified and prosecuted under India’s animal protection laws.
They vanished almost as quickly as they were captured. According to animal welfare advocates, more than one hundred community dogs were rounded up with wire nooses, forced into transport vans, and driven away to destinations that investigators are still trying to determine.
According to publicly reported information, police in Hanumakonda registered a First Information Report after residents and animal welfare organizations supplied video evidence showing dogs being captured using restrictive wire nooses. Investigators say that the animals were forcibly crammed into enclosed transport vehicles under unauthorized instructions to relocate them in violation of India’s statutory protections for community animals and the Supreme Court’s established framework governing their treatment.
Authorities are currently interviewing van drivers, examining transit records, and searching for the missing dogs to determine where they were taken and whether any died or suffered serious injury during transport. Animal welfare advocates have also expressed concern that prolonged confinement inside unventilated vehicles during humid weather may have exposed many of the animals to severe dehydration. The investigation remains active, and no court has determined criminal liability.
It appears this operation extends far beyond the unlawful removal of community dogs. Using painful capture devices and transporting animals in unsafe conditions could have exposed dozens of sentient animals to needless fear, injury, and suffering. Once those responsible are identified, a thorough investigation that holds everyone who authorized, carried out, or facilitated the operation accountable is essential to uphold the law and protect community animals from similar incidents.
