Stop Cruel Toothpaste Testing That Kills 200 Rats Per Experiment

Target: Kyle Diamantas, Acting Director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Goal: Eliminate painful animal testing for toothpaste that claims the lives of approximately 200 rats per test.

The continued reliance on animal testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for toothpaste products is an egregious practice that results in the suffering and death of countless animals. Despite the availability of reliable, human-relevant testing methods, this outdated approach claims the lives of around 200 rats for each test conducted. Such an inhumane practice, particularly when viable alternatives exist, raises serious ethical concerns and calls for immediate action to safeguard animals from unnecessary harm.

Animal testing, particularly for consumer products like toothpaste, is increasingly seen as both cruel and scientifically flawed. Studies show a growing body of evidence that non-animal testing methods can deliver more relevant results for human health without subjecting innocent animals to distress and death. The establishment of the new Office of Research Innovation, Validation, and Application (ORIVA) by the National Institutes of Health highlights the urgent need for agencies to pivot towards non-animal science, yet the FDA’s enduring commitment to animal test protocols remains a significant roadblock.

Changing the FDA’s approach is both necessary and urgent. Emphasizing humane and scientifically valid testing methods is crucial for the welfare of millions of animals subjected to painful experiments and for the advancement of more accurate and ethical research practices. This petition demands that the FDA immediately cease all animal testing for toothpaste and adopt the use of modern, non-animal methods, thus promoting a more humane and efficient regulatory process.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Diamantas,

The reliance on animal testing for toothpaste is a troubling practice that claims the lives of about 200 rats for each test. This inhumane treatment is not only ethically concerning but also scientifically outdated, especially given the existence of effective alternatives that do not involve animal suffering. As a society increasingly driven towards humane and sustainable practices, it is imperative that the FDA reassess its position on animal testing and explore human-relevant methods that prioritize both ethics and accuracy.

With the establishment of the new Office of Research Innovation, Validation, and Application at the NIH, there is a clear and growing recognition of the importance of non-animal approaches to testing. Embracing this paradigm shift is key to developing safer and more reliable products while ensuring the welfare of animals. The FDA’s continued adherence to archaic testing methods undermines these advancements and perpetuates unnecessary pain for countless animals.

Therefore, we urge you to take immediate action by eliminating the requirement for animal testing in the approval process for toothpaste. By championing the use of reliable, non-animal testing methods, the FDA can help pave the way for a future that values both scientific accuracy and humane treatment of all living beings.

Sincerely,
