Demand Action as “Sustainable” Brand Allegedly Falsifies Wastewater Samples to Discharge Pollutants

Target: Gregory Thomasson, Executive Director of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Sewer Authority

Goal: Hold slaughterhouse accountable for allegedly falsifying wastewater samples and contributing to environmental harm.

Farmer Focus, a brand that claims to uphold “humane” and “sustainable” practices, is allegedly involved in egregious acts of deception that not only mislead consumers but also threaten the health of local waterways. Reports indicate that employees at their Harrisonburg slaughter plant have been filtering wastewater samples to conceal harmful pollutants from state authorities, including chicken fat, grease, blood, and feces. It is alleged that these contaminants, which exceed legal limits, are being discharged into the North River, the Shenandoah River, and the Chesapeake Bay, posing significant risks to aquatic life and public health.

Further investigation by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Sewer Authority has revealed that Farmer Focus’s methods have led to multiple Notices of Violation due to unacceptably high levels of total suspended solids, organic materials, and nitrogen found in their sewer water. Such pollution not only endangers fish and other wildlife but also introduces pathogens like E. coli into the public wastewater system. Despite these shocking alleged revelations, Farmer Focus continues to market their chicken products as “sustainable.”

The demand for accountability in this situation is pressing. Allowing such reported practices to persist undermines public health and the integrity of environmental regulations. It is imperative that the authorities take decisive action against those responsible for this situation to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to protect both the ecosystem and consumers from harm.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Thomasson,

The actions of Farmer Focus have come under scrutiny due to alarming allegations of environmental violations and animal cruelty. Recent whistleblower reports indicate that employees at their Harrisonburg slaughter plant have manipulated wastewater samples to obscure the true extent of pollutants being discharged into local waterways. These pollutants—including chicken fat, blood, and feces—have reportedly been found in amounts far exceeding allowed limits, prompting the issuance of multiple Notices of Violation by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Sewer Authority.

Allegations have also surfaced regarding the treatment of chickens during processing, highlighting horrifying instances where birds are allegedly still conscious while being slaughtered. The suffering seemingly inflicted upon these animals, regardless of the label being marketed to consumers, points to a systemic issue that demands urgent action. It is unacceptable for any company to engage in such deceitful practices that result in both animal suffering and environmental degradation.

We urge you to take immediate action against Farmer Focus to hold them accountable for these alleged violations. It is essential not only to ensure compliance with environmental regulations but also to protect the local ecosystem and public health from further harm. Your leadership can help send a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,
