Endangered Seal Apparently Hit With Rock by Tourist: Demand Federal Prosecution

Target: Kelly Withers, Acting United States Attorney, District of Hawaii, Hawaii

Goal: Pursue maximum federal penalties against person accused of attacking and harassing a protected endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

A disturbing wildlife protection investigation intensified after witness video reportedly captured a tourist throwing a large rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal resting on a beach. The animal, known locally as “Lani,” is a federally protected species under wildlife conservation laws.

Federal investigators with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reportedly reviewed the footage and later arrested a suspect. Wildlife biologists monitored the seal following the incident and observed signs of distress, though the animal survived. Prosecutors subsequently initiated federal proceedings involving allegations of harassment of a protected marine animal.

Wildlife advocates emphasize that endangered species depend upon strict legal protections to survive and recover. If substantiated, these allegations would represent deliberate harassment directed toward a vulnerable protected animal. Strong federal prosecution is necessary to deter future attacks on endangered wildlife and reinforce the importance of conservation laws designed to protect threatened species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Acting U.S. Attorney Withers,

Authorities have reported allegations involving an endangered Hawaiian monk seal struck by a large rock while resting on a shoreline.

Federal investigators reviewed witness video and arrested a suspect in connection with the reported incident. If proven, the alleged conduct would represent unlawful harassment and cruelty directed toward a protected endangered animal.

We urge your office to pursue maximum federal penalties against any individuals found responsible for this attack on protected wildlife.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
