Don’t Kill Healthy Animals in the Name of Veterinary Training

Target: Elizabeth R. Cantwell, President of Washington State University

Goal: End the cruel practice of killing healthy animals in veterinary training and release the saved horses to sanctuaries.

Animals at Washington State University are allegedly subjected to horrifying treatment in a Junior Surgery laboratory, where veterinary students cut open and kill healthy animals, such as goats and horses, for surgical practice. Recently, the university reportedly canceled a plan to kill eight adoptable horses due to pressure from PETA and the public, but the fate of these horses remains uncertain. In addition, the university allegedly continues to utilize goats in invasive procedures that culminate in their deaths, highlighting a disturbing routine that prioritizes outdated practices over compassion and humane treatment.

Despite the university’s decision to spare the horses from imminent slaughter, the institution apparently intends to continue the use of goats in similarly cruel training methodologies that involve incision and killing. PETA has urged the university to pursue more humane teaching methods that would eliminate the need for animal suffering while preparing students for clinical practice effectively.

It is crucial that Washington State University takes immediate action to ensure that no healthy animals suffer in its training programs. The release of the saved horses to suitable sanctuaries is an important step in acknowledging the need for change. Furthermore, the university must decisively end the use of all animals in terminal laboratories and adopt compassionate, animal-free methods that respect animal welfare. The time for change is now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Cantwell,

Reports indicate that animals at Washington State University endure severe mistreatment within the confines of the Junior Surgery laboratory, where they are subjected to invasive surgeries before being killed. Recent events surrounding eight innocent horses reveal a startling reality: while these horses were spared from certain death due to public outcry, the practice of killing healthy animals for educational purposes continues with goats. Such actions raise grave ethical concerns and call into question the integrity of the university’s training programs.

PETA’s efforts have made it painfully clear that the university has options beyond torturing animals in the name of education. It is essential for the university to consider the detrimental implications of maintaining these alleged practices, which do nothing to improve the education of future veterinarians while causing unnecessary harm to sentient beings.

We urge you to prioritize compassion by permanently ending the use of animals in all terminal laboratories, redirecting resources toward humane, animal-free teaching alternatives that reflect a commitment to ethical education. Additionally, the rescued horses should be released to reputable sanctuaries where they can live out their lives in peace and safety. It is time for Washington State University to lead by example in prioritizing animal welfare.

Sincerely,
