Prosecute Man Charged With Poisoning Neighbor’s Cats

Target: Katherine Fernandez Rundle, State Attorney of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, Florida

Goal: Prosecute the man allegedly caught on home surveillance video poisoning a neighbor’s cats with food laced with a crystal substance, leading to the animals’ deaths.

A deeply disturbing case has emerged after a man was arrested following the discovery of home surveillance footage apparently showing him placing food laced with a crystal substance near a neighbor’s cats — resulting in the animals’ deaths. The accused, identified as Biscayne Park resident Chaim Gubitz, was charged with animal cruelty after police say the footage captured him carrying out the alleged poisoning. Deliberately poisoning a neighbor’s animals is not only a profound act of cruelty against the animals themselves — it is a calculated act of malice against their owners and a public safety concern given the use of an unidentified crystal substance in a residential area.

According to reports, the case came to light following the deaths of the cats, after which home surveillance footage was reviewed and seemingly identified Gubitz carrying out the poisoning. The nature of the alleged crime — deliberate, premeditated, and carried out covertly using a toxic substance — distinguishes this case from acts of impulsive cruelty and points to a calculated decision to end the lives of a neighbor’s animals.

The existence of surveillance evidence, combined with the reported deaths of the animals, makes this a strong and compelling case for vigorous prosecution. The State Attorney must ensure that Gubitz faces the full weight of Florida’s animal cruelty laws and that the deliberate, premeditated nature of the alleged conduct is fully reflected in any sentencing outcome.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear State Attorney Fernandez Rundle,

We are writing to urge the fullest possible prosecution of a man charged with animal cruelty after home surveillance footage allegedly captured him placing food laced with a crystal substance near a neighbor’s cats — resulting in the deaths of those animals. The accused, Chaim Gubitz, was arrested and charged following the review of surveillance footage that allegedly documented the poisoning. The cats apparently consumed the laced food and died. The alleged use of a toxic substance, placed deliberately and covertly near animals in a residential neighborhood, points to a calculated and premeditated act of cruelty.

We are deeply troubled by the nature of this alleged conduct. Poisoning an animal requires deliberate preparation — obtaining the toxic substance, approaching the animals covertly, and placing the laced food in a position where it would be consumed. It is not impulsive violence. This is, if the allegations are borne out, a planned act of lethal animal cruelty carried out in a community setting, with consequences that extended to the deaths of multiple cats. The existence of home surveillance evidence documenting the alleged act makes this a particularly prosecutable case.

We respectfully demand that your office pursue the maximum available penalties under Florida’s animal cruelty statutes, ensure that the premeditated nature of the alleged conduct is presented fully to the court, and that any sentencing include a permanent prohibition on animal ownership. These cats were allegedly poisoned by a neighbor who thought no one was watching. The cameras were. We ask that your office ensure justice is delivered for the animals who lost their lives.

Sincerely,
