Success: Extinct Butterflies Make a Comeback

Target: Julie Williams, CEO of Butterfly Conservation

Goal: Support protections for at-risk and endangered butterfly species.

Half of butterfly species in the United States face “significant” threats to their survival, with populations dropping by over one-fifth in just two decades’ time. Globally, the trend has continued, as evidenced by this ForceChange petition. But promising developments could signal the beginning of a butterfly resurrection.

In the United Kingdom, a species that has been regionally extinct for six decades has experienced a resurgence. As a result, the large tortoiseshell butterfly is now listed once again as a resident species…and no longer extinct. Observations of breeding among the species is promising for long-term population restoration. In addition, the storied monarch butterfly – a North American fixture that embarks on one of the world’s longest migrations, from Canada to Mexico, has seen its numbers rise by almost 65 percent in Mexico. While this butterfly still fights for protections in the United States, a Mexican crackdown on illegal logging has helped the monarch flourish south of the border.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Williams,

As butterflies around the world still face critical threats, a moment should be taken to commend the resilience of these flying wildlife warriors. The monarch butterfly is on a soaring trajectory in Mexico. And – as this advocacy group has validated – the large tortoiseshell butterfly has clawed its way from extinction in the United Kingdom.

Thank you for all your efforts in making good on your mission to save butterflies and their habitats across the UK and across the world.

Sincerely,
