Stop Killing Innocent Wildlife Over Minor Property Disturbances

Target: Maura Healey, Massachusetts Governor

Goal: Don’t allow landowners to kill wild animals over minor disturbances.

Wildlife in Massachusetts face an alarming threat under current law that allows landowners to kill any wild animal purportedly causing damage to their property. This law, which lacks clear definitions of “damage,” opens the door to potential abuse and the reckless killing of wildlife. Reports suggest that landowners may take lethal measures against innocent animals for minor disturbances, creating a chilling effect that could devastate local wildlife populations.

Despite recommendations from MassWildlife to utilize non-lethal methods as the first line of defense, including physical barriers and repellents, the law provides a blanket license for lethal action. Such conditions encourage landowners to act solely upon their discretion, often leading to the unnecessary suffering and death of countless animals. The consequences of these actions could have long-term detrimental effects on the ecosystem and wildlife diversity in the region.

It is critical that this law be amended to prevent misuse, protect the rights of wildlife, and ensure that any killing of wild animals is justified and proportional. Stricter regulations must be implemented to define “damage” explicitly, and appropriate punishments must be enforced for landowners who act recklessly. This is not only necessary for protecting wildlife, but essential for maintaining the balance of Massachusetts’ unique ecosystems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Healey,

Massachusetts law permits landowners to kill wild animals purportedly causing damage to property. This vague statute does not adequately define what constitutes as damage and relies heavily on the discretion of landowners and MEP officers, which raises concerns about potential abuse. This may lead to scenarios where innocent animals are killed for insignificant issues, including minor disturbances in gardens or properties.

Furthermore, while MassWildlife advocates for considering non-lethal measures first, the lack of rigor in enforcement and accountability only serves to create an environment where animals are at risk of being unjustly harmed. Every unnecessary killing undermines the efforts to coexist with wildlife and threatens the fragile balance of local ecosystems. It is imperative to recognize that these animals are vital components of our environment and should be treated with respect and care.

Therefore, we urge you to implement stricter regulations clarifying the term “damage” and to ensure appropriate consequences for landowners who misuse their lethal authority over wildlife. The time for change is now, and it is crucial to protect the wildlife that enrich our communities.

Sincerely,
