Stop Racing Dogs to Death in the Iditarod

Target: Mike Dunleavy, Alaska Governor

Goal: Cancel the Iditarod to end the suffering and deaths of dogs involved in this brutal race.

Every year, the Iditarod dog sled race continues to expose dogs to extreme suffering and an alarming death toll. Records indicate that since its inception, the race has resulted in the deaths of more than 150 dogs, a staggering figure that does not account for those who perish during the harsh off-season conditions. Recent reports during the 2025 race indicate that over 180 dogs were removed from the competition due to exhaustion, illness, and injury, with many forced to endure grueling conditions until they collapsed.

Among the heartbreaking incidents is the story of Ventana, who allegedly died after being pushed to run 300 miles in the late stages of her pregnancy. Hank reportedly suffered a tragic fate when he broke through ice into a freezing river and was dragged by his team rather than being rescued by the musher. Similarly, Jett allegedly collapsed and required emergency care, only to have the event downplayed during the race’s livestream, which claimed all dogs were healthy.

As the evidence mounts regarding the suffering of dogs in the Iditarod, it is imperative to demand an end to this race. The Iditarod seemingly not only inflicts immense physical strain on the dogs but also perpetuates a cycle of neglect, as many continue to run even when suffering from injuries or illness. The time has come to cancel the Iditarod to prevent further needless suffering and save the lives of countless dogs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Dunleavy,

The Iditarod race has a troubling legacy of suffering, injury, and death among the participating dogs, which has reportedly claimed over 150 canine lives since its start. Recent reports from the 2025 race reveal a shocking scenario where more than 180 dogs were pulled from the trail due to severe exhaustion, illness, and injuries.

Heart-wrenching cases have emerged, such as the tragic story of Ventana, who was apparently forced to run long distances while pregnant, and Hank, who allegedly suffered fatal consequences after breaking through icy waters. Jett’s collapse and subsequent care were seemingly downplayed, reflecting a severe lack of accountability for the wellbeing of these animals. Further, evidence has surfaced indicating that many dogs suffer from long-term health issues caused by these grueling races, underscoring the need for immediate action.

In light of these disturbing facts and ongoing suffering, it is essential to take a stand and cancel the Iditarod. The practice of forcing dogs to endure grueling races until they collapse is both inhumane and unacceptable. I urge you to take decisive action to put a stop to this race and protect the dogs that suffer in the name of competition.

Sincerely,
