Seek Answers and Justice for Renee Good, Fatally Shot by ICE Agent

Target: Drew Evans, Superintendent of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension

Goal: Proceed with investigation into deadly ICE-involved shooting of Renee Nicole Good.

Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis who allegedly shot her in the face multiple times as she smiled and gave assurances that she meant no harm. Widespread protests and highly charged clashes between officials at all levels of government followed the event. State and local law enforcement have reportedly been kept out of the investigation, which has led many critics to accuse the federal government of a cover-up.

Statements from the Department of Homeland Security and other federal entities in the immediate aftermath – that immediately deemed the victim a criminal, and that eyewitness testimony and video footage seem to contradict – did nothing to assuage those concerns. Neither did a troubling pattern that has emerged following the unprecedented expansion of ICE powers.

In the four months preceding Good’s shooting, roughly a dozen individuals were shot by ICE agents, and three of them were killed. A day after the incident with Good, two other individuals in Portland were shot. In almost all the instances, the official narrative claimed that the detained individuals were attacking agents, many presumably with their cars. Yet evidence that emerged after some of these incidents called into question the official accounts, including at least one of the shootings that resulted in a fatality.

In Good’s case, the optics have been even more troubling. Initially, Department of Homeland Security head Kristi Noem had claimed that agents were attempting to remove their vehicle from snow when Good’s car rammed them. But video footage has upended that narrative and appears to show a non-combative and smiling Good. Questions have also arisen about whether ICE agents, who are tasked with immigration cases, even had the authority to approach a U.S. citizen. But if the status quo continues, these questions will remain unanswered.

For the sake of all involved parties and for the sake of the nation, a transparent and thorough investigation must be conducted by the authorities where this tragedy took place. Sign the petition below to demand Minnesota law enforcement pursue this investigation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Superintendent Evans,

Renee Nicole Good was a Minnesotan killed on Minnesota soil. Please work relentlessly to ensure that this bureau and local investigators have access to all evidence and testimony relating to this incident. A community that has once again found itself at the center of a painful and volatile event with national implications should have this peace of mind.

Do not withdraw from the investigation. Whatever the circumstances of her death may prove to be, Renee Good, her family, and the families of the federal agents involved deserve transparency and truth. This tragedy must not be politicized, because at the end of the day it’s about a human life.

Sincerely,
