Stop Beating and Suffocating Fish to Death

Target: Emma Reynolds, MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs

Goal: Hold those allegedly responsible for systemic cruelty toward fish accountable and ensure more humane practices.

Mowi Scotland’s alleged practices at its Loch Harport farm are deeply disturbing and warrant immediate attention and action. Reports indicate that shocking footage, captured by the Green Britain Foundation, reveals numerous instances of systemic cruelty, including salmon being left to suffocate out of water for extended periods and beaten to death. Such practices not only violate fish welfare standards but also reflect a shocking disregard for the lives of these creatures, prompting significant concern over animal welfare in the salmon farming industry.

The videos reportedly document at least 18 incidents of egregious animal cruelty, where salmon suffer incredibly painful deaths, contradicting welfare standards that dictate humane treatment. Under these standards, fish must not be left out of water for more than 15 seconds, and methods for euthanizing them should ensure they become insensible immediately. Mowi’s actions, as reported, starkly deviate from these guidelines, underscoring the urgency for restitution and reform.

Effective changes are desperately needed to uphold animal welfare in the aquaculture sector. It is crucial that those implicated in the alleged cruelty at Mowi Scotland are held accountable. The demand is clear: ensure that strict penalties and oversight measures are implemented to prevent any future acts of cruelty towards fish and to restore ethical standards within the industry.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear MP Reynolds,

The alleged cruelty taking place at Mowi Scotland’s Loch Harport farm is not only heartbreaking but shocking and unacceptable. As reported, the Green Britain Foundation has provided footage that depicts fish suffering from inhumane treatment, including being suffocated for minutes and beaten to death. This behavior stands in stark contrast to established animal welfare standards, which Mowi is expected to uphold.

The images of salmon left gasping for air and subjected to cruel methods of euthanasia are deeply upsetting. The RSPCA has condemned these practices, leading to Mowi’s suspension from its welfare scheme. Such severe accusations highlight a critical need for accountability for those responsible for this alleged systemic cruelty. The public deserves assurance that these animals are treated humanely and ethically.

We urge you to take immediate action to hold any individuals or organizations accountable for these practices and to implement stringent measures to ensure such acts of cruelty do not recur. It is vital to restore integrity and standards in the fish farming industry.

Sincerely,
