Justice for 84 Animals Reportedly Found in Filth and Surrounded by Urine and Feces

Target: David M. Hoovler, District Attorney of Orange County, NY

Goal: Ensure appropriate punishment for woman accused of keeping 84 animals in squalid, unlivable conditions.

A horrific situation recently uncovered in Warwick, NY, has shed light on the alarming conditions faced by 84 animals allegedly neglected and abused by their owner. Linda Hickey, 62, has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to provide proper sustenance under the state’s Agriculture and Markets Law. The evidence, as reported by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, suggests a disturbing reality where animals were found in filthy enclosures, surrounded by the overwhelming smell of urine and feces, showing clear signs of neglect.

The investigation began following a complaint in 2024, leading to the seizure of 66 animals on September 17 and an additional 18 on September 19. Among those rescued were numerous species—from rabbits, geese, and parrots to hedgehogs, tortoises, and even a wallaby—all reportedly discovered in squalid conditions without adequate care. The conditions were apparently so severe that the Warwick building inspector condemned the residence after an on-site inspection, highlighting the urgent need for accountability in cases of animal neglect.

It is vital that the local authorities take a strong stance against such cruel treatment of animals, protecting them from future harm and ensuring that any individual found to have committed these alleged acts faces appropriate penalties. The action demanded in this petition is essential not only for the sake of the animals involved but also as a message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in any form.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear DA Hoovler,

The recent case involving Linda Hickey, who has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to provide proper sustenance for 84 animals, is deeply troubling and deserves immediate attention. The heart-wrenching images of animals seemingly found in filthy cages, neglected and suffering due to unsanitary conditions, underline the necessity for accountability. Multiple species, including rabbits, geese, parrots, and even a wallaby, were reportedly kept without adequate care, revealing a shocking lack of regard for their well-being.

The community has expressed outrage at the conditions these animals endured before their rescue. The swift action taken by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, along with the dedicated work of the Warwick Valley Humane Society and Animal Nation, must be supported by the appropriate legal actions against those responsible for this alleged cruelty. Animals cannot speak for themselves, and it is imperative that their suffering results in meaningful consequences for the individuals who caused it.

We urge you to ensure that Linda Hickey is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law for her alleged actions. Please take the necessary steps to seek appropriate punishment for those involved in this case.

Sincerely,
